They explore Shekhawati towns such as Ramgarh, Lachhmangarh, Fatehpur, Mandawa, Dhundlod and Churu vis-a-vis the colonial cities of India, studying the palatial homes of rich merchant families, sumptuously decorated with paintings or "Shekhawati collages" on a range of subjects, and the architectural typologies of havelis, joharas, mandirs.
Fascinated, he settles nearby and, exploring, finds that the main painted towns lie in the defunct administrative district of Shekhawati. The Painted Towns of Shekhawati by Ilay Cooper was a serendipitous find, and I want to first share how I found the book with you before telling you what the book is all about. It was a rainy August day in and I was feeling quite sorry for myself at that time.

Shekhawati is a region of north-eastern Rajasthan famous for its small towns whose walls are painted with colourful paintings.
It is away from the well-trodden tourist trails but more people are becoming aware of its unique offering. The first time I came across this region was while browsing at a Crossword bookshop in Bangalore. Located in the north, it has a number of painted havelis, as well as an old palace and numerous temples.
However, it lacks the charm of the smaller villages. Fatehpur: Fatehpur, founded in the mid 15th century and taken over by Shekhawati Rajputs in the 18th century, has many painted havelis. Unfortunately, again, many haven't been well : Sharell Cook.
